Equations, inequalities and systems

Solving an equation means finding the values of the unknown that make it true. This topic reviews linear and quadratic equations, factoring, equations with fractions and roots (and why you must check), inequalities with a sign chart and systems of linear equations by elimination.

Linear and quadratic equations

An equation becomes an equivalent one by doing the same thing to both sides: adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing by something other than zero. A linear one () is solved directly: . A quadratic is solved with the quadratic formula:

two real rootsΔ > 0one double rootΔ = 0no real rootsΔ < 0
The discriminant tells how many times the parabola cuts the axis.

If the roots and are known, the polynomial factors as . Conversely, if a product is zero, one of the factors is zero: that is why factoring is a way of solving.

Fractions and roots: always check

With unknowns in the denominator, multiply by the common denominator; but the values that make it zero cannot be solutions. With a root, isolate it and square both sides; squaring can create extraneous solutions (from we go to , which also satisfies). That is why each candidate is substituted into the original equation.

Inequalities

To solve (or , , ) bring everything to one side, find the critical points (where is 0 or does not exist) and test the sign of at one value of each interval: that is the sign chart. When an inequality is multiplied or divided by a negative number, it flips.

Systems of linear equations

They are written as an augmented matrix and row operations are applied (swapping rows, multiplying a row by a nonzero number, adding a multiple of one row to another) until it is in echelon form: that is Gaussian elimination (or Gauss-Jordan if it reaches the identity). A system can have one solution, none or infinitely many:

they cross: one solutionparallel: nonethe same line: infinitely many
With two unknowns, each equation is a line and the solution is their intersection.
After elimination…TypeSolutions
one pivot per unknownconsistent, independentone
fewer pivots than unknowns, no rowsconsistent, dependentinfinitely many (free variables)
a row with inconsistentnone
The calculator solves systems by the method you choose (Gauss-Jordan, Gauss, Cramer, inverse matrix, substitution, equating or elimination) and shows each row operation. In equations it checks each solution before giving it.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by to simplify: the solution is lost. Better to factor it out.
  • Forgetting the when taking a square root: gives and .
  • Not checking the solutions of an equation with roots or fractions.
  • Multiplying an inequality by an expression that can be negative without flipping it (better to use the sign chart).
